MILAN, Aug 13 (Reuters) – Serie A teams agreed on Friday to launch their Arabic-language channel on YouTube to broadcast live matches in the Middle East and North Africa as Italy’s top soccer league faces the challenge of selling its TV rights in the region.

Serie A, home to Juventus, AC Milan and Inter, has been trying for months to seize the ban on the sale of its games for the next three seasons in a market that includes Egypt, Morocco and the Gulf States.

But Qatari broadcaster BeIn has been reluctant to join the tender process, while negotiations with the Saudi Sports Company about the broadcasting deal could be fruitless, sources said earlier, leaving the agreement ahead of the August 21 season at first.

The league has “decided to continue building an Arabic language channel on YouTube,” Serie A said in a statement, following a phone call, confirming what sources told Reuters earlier on Friday.

An agreement to work with Google’s YouTube (GOOGL.O) video platform, which is not expected to make a lot of money, could last for one year and be suspended if the league gets a deal to sell its pay-TV licenses in the region, people say.
Under the last three-year cycle, Serie A collected 970 million euros ($ 1.14 billion) in adjusted revenue from the sale of TV rights rights licenses. To date the Italian league has secured contracts worth around Rs 640 million for live streaming overseas during the 2021-2024 season.

The risk of a lack of revenue caused by the instability in the Middle East market comes at a time when many clubs are looking for new resources to deal with the epidemic.
This could prompt Serie A to consider reviving trade talks in the media business for private investors, sources said.

Last year, Serie A officially signed a 1.7 billion euro deal to sell 10% of their media business to a pool of investors including the private company CVC but the sale was not finalized due to competition from other parties, including Juventus (JUVE) .MI).

CVC meanwhile have secured a similar deal with La Liga for top Spanish football.
It was not a matter of negotiation today, but I expect other clubs to try to negotiate an agreement with private investors in September, “a club official who participated in Friday’s Serie A meeting, but did not wish to be identified, told Reuters.
